Bring the best outdoor education to your school
Forest workshops for class groups
Forest School education significantly enhances and enriches mainstream education. It is especially beneficial for children who do not live near wooded areas and have limited access to outside spaces (except for the school playground).
The benefits of learner focused Forest School education for children include:
-
Creating independence
-
Improving focus
-
Building confidence and self esteem
-
Enhancing social skills
-
Increasing teamwork ability
-
Developing a healthy lifestyle
We use the 6 core principles of Forest School to create learning and social opportunities for children. The principles are:
-
Long Term Process
-
Takes place in a natural environment
-
Adopts a holistic approach to development
-
Supportive risk taking
-
Run by qualified people
-
Learner Focused
These benefits are compatible with and closely linked to developing children’s primary education in a positive and practical way.
Some examples of how the school curriculum can be seamlessly incorporated into forest school education in an interactive way are:
-
Mathematics: using numbers, measuring, estimating, distance
-
English: creating stories about their environment, drama, asking questions
-
History/Geography: Learning about trees, soil, animals and habitats, growth, life cycles, using a compass
-
Practical Skills: woodwork, artwork, sawing, drilling, building
-
Physical Education: Climbing, walking, obstacle courses and more
EFFECTIVENESS:
While Forest School education is not measured by SATS and other tests, the well-being, confidence and self-esteem the children develop and show as a result of regular forest school activities speaks volumes. You can see some testimonials from parents and children here.
-
Some of the activities we offer in the workshops:
-
Learning about the elder tree and making jewellery or other artefacts from elder sticks.
-
Hapa Zome – this is the Japanese art of pounding leaves and flowers with stones to make beautiful designs on cloth.
-
Clay ornaments – children will learn how to make pots and other woodland animals using clay and appropriate tools
-
Making medals, leaf press, and more
DURATION:
Each session is between 60-75 minutes learning in the forest environment, run weekly or fortnightly. We will support the learning in the topic of the lesson exchanged for a Forest School session e.g. if the class would be having maths at that time we’ll ensure some of the syllabus is covered in the session.
We work on a ratio of 1:8 adult to children. This includes 2 forest school teachers, the class teacher and a class room assistant to maximise the benefits and outcomes of learning in a forest environment, and to maintain best practice for safety and guidance.
Minimum of 20 children per session
Minimum course: 4 forest learning sessions in one term

All resources are provided by Kidz Kabin Forest School, including tools such as junior hacksaws, peelers for whittling, palm drills, small hammers, safety gloves, and arts and crafts materials.
